Avoid the Holiday Blues
submitted by Corpcare Associates, Inc.
The things that make the holidays fun for some people are the same things that make them torture for others. The pressures to be with family, go to parties, have house guests, the
demands of shopping, fatigue, travel, and unrealistic expectations all contribute to holiday depression. The feeling many people have that they are "supposed" to be happy only makes it
worse. (Source: LifeHub 2005 Holiday Newsletter)
There are ways that you can avoid feeling blue this season:
Just say “no”. Many people begin to feel irritable and depressed because they take on too much and get physically and emotionally run down. Pace yourself. You don’t have to be
everywhere. Pick and choose your activities.
Let others share in the fun of holiday preparations. Just as you don’t have to be everywhere, you don’t have to do everything yourself. So what if the decorations on the tree aren’t
perfect? Just have fun making it a group activity.
Drink alcohol moderately if at all. While you may think it is “relaxing” and making you feel better, alcohol is actually a depressant – so if you are feeling a bit depressed, it will
only make things worse.
Spend time with close supportive friends. Arrange to have a casual lunch with a good friend or two during the season to stock up on support.
Remember that it’s ok not to feel “happy” all the time. However, if you feel that the blues are really beginning to bring you down, don’t be afraid to call your Employee Assistance
Program. They are there to help you.
